Interview With a Processor

Now, let me get this straight, you're a Processor?

"Yes, My given name is Intel 80486DX4-100, but my friends call me 486."

And in a few words, what is it you do for a living?

"Well, 'In A Few Words...' is going to be a little tough. You see, I'm the most important part of the computer. You might be better off asking, 'What don't I do?' The complexity of my job is incredible, the demands on my time are constant, the interruptions never end, the..."

Yes, I see, but could you be a little more specific.

"My rule of thumb is: 'if it's going to be, its up to me!' When someone needs numbers added, I'm the one they call on. When a program needs information from the Disk Drive, I manage the request. When someone..."

But I thought some disk drives or CD ROMs or monitors or other devices had their own processors built in?

"In some cases, that may be true, to a limited extent, but I'm still the one everyone calls on to manage the whole process. You could call me the Chairman of the Processors."

I see. Now isn't your job made easier by others that are around you, like Memory for example?

"Yea, right. Have you ever tried to manage memory? The amount of my time I have to waste making up for memory deficiencies is incredible. I'm working on a way to replace memory altogether, but I've not got it quite worked out yet. By the way, if you're planning on talking to the other components as a part of this story, don't believe anything they say about me. You know how critical subsystems can be."

Yes, so I've heard. Now tell me... Oh, hold on for a second, I think that was a knock at the door... Great news, the UPS guy just stopped by and he dropped off something from your parents!

"My Parents?"

Yes, it's from the Intel company, so it must be something from your family, lets see. Oh neat! It must be a relative of yours, you look just alike. The only difference is he has a tattoo on his back that says... Let me see... I see it now... It says "Pentium!" Oh, and what's this? "Instructions On How To Replace Your Old Processor..."

"When He noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he told them this parable: 'When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished will come and say to you, 'Give this man your seat.' Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place. But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you 'Friend, move up to a better place.' Then you will be honored in the presence of all your fellow guests." Luke 14:7-10
